Why do we romanticize male TV chefs so much?

Published

on

It’s widely known that professional kitchens are stressful, stressful places, and with that comes the assumption that women won’t be able to handle the intensity, and that we’re just too “sensitive” to it. I always think of the thousands of recipes passed down through generations of women, only to end up on a Michelin-starred list with some dude taking the credit, as if he built the flavor profiles with his own hands. If women “belong in the kitchen,” why aren’t we in it professionally?

It’s jarring then, how much I enjoy watching fictional chefs slurp up and cook up a storm. Not just because they’re sexy (although if we’re being honest, a lot of them are). This is because I love food, and thus I like to feel like I’m peeping behind a kitchen curtain through movies like boiling point. I love him because I never felt like he would let me there in real life. I love drama, tension, and passion—because food stirs that up in me, too. But I need to stop romanticizing it.

Recent on-screen portrayals have juxtaposed female characters, and some do a good job of realistically showing the sexism they face. Like Head Chef Sidney Adams in The bear, who struggles with the machismo of the kitchen and has to work 10 times harder to be heard by her less competent male counterparts. But seeing a woman front and center? I can’t think of a single example.

In a welcome change, the new boiling point series Continuing six months right where the movie left off, Sue will see Chef Carly (Vineet Robinson) head chef at her very own restaurant. Maybe we’ll finally get to see a well-rounded, well-rounded female chef on our screens. If young girls can see women cooking on screen, even fictional, the more they will be inspired to pursue a career in the culinary world. Who knows where life would take me if the culture I was taking in was different.
