A Texas man was arrested after he entered a newborn nursery, started running and kidnapped and strangled a baby while saying, “Die!”

On Monday evening, the Odessa Police Department arrested an 18-year-old man who allegedly broke into the newborn nursery at the Odessa Regional Medical Center and assaulted two infants along with a group of medical staff trying to help the children. Now an affidavit has revealed new details about the events that led to the arrest of Marcus McCwan Jr.

McCwan was charged with two counts of attempted capital murder, as well as assault, assault on a public servant, resisting arrest, attempting to take a weapon from an officer, criminal trespass, and possession of a controlled substance.

According to the affidavit, around 6:30 p.m. on October 3, officers from the Odessa Police Department were called to ORMC, located at 520 E 6th Street after nurses called 911 and said a man was choking a baby. Officers arrived at the scene, and after a short altercation McCowan tried to resist him, putting handcuffs in his hands. Investigators said that while McCwan was escorting him, he twice tried to take an officer’s pistol out of his holster but was unsuccessful.

Once McCawan was removed from the labor and delivery unit, investigators met with several nurses and a respiratory therapist who explained in detail what had happened.

McCowan was visiting the hospital because his girlfriend was in labour. According to one of the nurses, McCwan approached her at the nurse’s post, grabbed her arm and made an “incomprehensible statement.” He was asked to leave the area and the nurses said he then started running back and forth down the hall. The nurses described McCwan’s actions as “bizarre and unreasonable”.

McCwan then reportedly approached a new mother who was carrying her newborn in a baby carrier while waiting for her to be discharged from the hospital. The nurses said McConne began to focus his attention on the newborn, but moved away briefly when the new mother moved her baby out of his view.
