Ralph Lauren Goes West | GQ

Published

on

On his Spring 2023 show, which took place last night, Ralph Lauren did what many New Yorkers have done in the past two years: He flew to Los Angeles. For the first time, Lauren showed West, and he did so in unique Ralph style, bringing his grip on RL collections, from Polo to Purple Label to RRL, to Huntington Gardens in Pasadena to display them all at once. “California has always been a land of dreams and contrasts—rugged coastlines and red carpets,” he said in the show notes. “For the first time ever, I’m bringing my dream of living here, sharing my worlds in an experience that celebrates a way of life I’ve always believed in – a blend of determination, charm, energy and inspiration.” As if to remind guests that he’s still the world’s preeminent fashion maker, tonight was a show for the rest of Ralph’s World, too: burgers served for dinner afterwards were on the menu at Manhattan’s Polo Bar.

The guest list was multigenerational: Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, Sylvester Stallone and family, Diane Keaton, Chris Pine, Laura Dern, John Legend, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, as well as a few TikTok stars. The weather was helpful, too: Thanks to the exhibit’s botanical garden location, likely, a particularly foggy Los Angeles day was clear and crisp by the time the sun went down and the lights came on.

The show itself capitalized on its collection: While Ralph’s typical show limits his menswear to a formal Purple Label, Thursday’s proceedings opened magically, with RRL, the brand’s deep homage to 19th-century Western life. The models in cowboy hats couldn’t help but nod and wink at the audience as they walked out of the central museum building in the gardens: Hello my lady. Good suit, right? (For the usually heavy line on indigo and cotton, the RRL suit—always with boots—was a killer.)

The Purple Label went down the runway to the cover of “California Dreaming”—on the nose, perhaps, but in the exact manner Ralph’s always best. You’re not here for disruptive, sarcastic, and post-trend fashion – you’re here to look good, and feel good while doing it. If your tailoring tends to be a little more Mediterranean than pure California, that’s okay: Nobody wears suits in Los Angeles, anyway.

and good feelings truly The business began when a show of polo models appeared on the runway, most of them accompanied by painfully cute little children in tiny tweed jackets and cricket jackets. An immersion of polo color – red, blue, yellow and green, mixed with neon – shut things down. The last models came back inside, and the music was cut off. “Ye ah,” Shouted tranceAngus Cloud, wearing a newsboy hat, and the rest of the crowd agreed.

As if you remind us that you can – you must! Wearing it all together, Ralph himself showed off his bow in shades of white: a jacket, sweats, and a pair of running shoes, in every little corner of the RL world somehow contained in one easy-to-wear outfit. “Los Angeles is fine, but it’s not at home,” Neil Diamond yelled over the speakers. Not necessarily at home, but for a night, very good.
