Paid Vacation: How Dawn Huckelbridge Fights To Get It All

Published

How do you deal with rejection in your field?

I think, at the end of the day, in advocacy, you have setbacks, and we’ve certainly had quite a few of them, very highs and lows. I think what you do is take the hit, then take the beat and come back. I think it’s about conviction, remembering why you’re doing this work. You need to take the time to take care of yourself emotionally and physically. But you should always go back to the task and think about why you are doing the work you are doing.

Is there career advice that you would have liked to have learned in college?

I would say sometimes rejection is a blessing. Sometimes jobs or results that didn’t make sense at the time make sense years later. So even when you feel off course, you never know where something will lead you–or what you can learn.

What is the most valuable career lesson you learned through the experience?

I like to say this to young women: Make real friends in the workplace and start at an early age. Don’t just make contacts, colleagues or friends on social media. I found out that I was really lucky to make some real friends in my twenties, while I was in graduate school and while working at Hillary Clinton Campaign. And while work brought us together, it was trust and true friendship that kept us going. Now many of these women have run for Congress, served in administrations, and led major newspapers. I think if you find people you trust and respect early on, and who genuinely support each other, you might find that you help each other find jobs.

What is your best life advice, not related to your career?

When I was growing up, my older brothers were my role models and mentors. And they always pushed me to train harder, to argue smarter, and to run faster. I would go jogging with one of them and he never let me give up when I got tired. He was sitting relaxing with me. But he always encouraged me to go further. I guess that taught me that if you don’t win right away, you never stop trying. You take care of yourself, of course, but you also run harder on the hills. And I think that’s a lesson I carry with me to this day.

What does the future of advocacy look like?

It’s hard to say. The stakes are too high for democracy itself. Legislation has become more difficult in Congress where there are few concessions. It can be frustrating, but I think you have to do your best to succeed in the system in order to see any change.

What distinguishes a resume or cover letter?

passion. Also, I would say good grammar. I really like the Oxford comma.

Name the people whose stories you would never cross over on Instagram.

I use Instagram in more personal ways than in professional ways. So I always watch my friends’ stories. It’s how I continue to travel and kids. My niece joined recently, and I’m watching her stories for soccer updates. She is a star.
