Oath Keeper describes the group’s large cache of weapons before January 6

Cummings showed jurors the AR-15 he had brought with him and had contributed to stockpiling the weapons, as well as a box of ammunition.

Justice Department prosecutors spent most of their day — in the second week of the likely six-week trial against Rhodes and four other defendants — unearthing Signal’s encrypted messages between Rhodes and the group’s regional leaders organizing and activating plans to travel to Washington. On January 6, many of these messages described their goal as preventing President Joe Biden from taking office and pressuring Trump to invoke the Insurrection Act, which Rhodes claimed would allow the group to forcibly prevent Congress from certifying the results of the 2020 election.

“We armed Americans have one good trick left up our sleeves. It’s the same guy Samuel Whitmore.” [sic] long used, along with all the other farmers who have fired shots heard around the world,” Rhodes wrote to oath keepers in Georgia on December 14, 2020, describing the beginning of the American Revolution.

In a letter dated December 20, 2020, to the same chat on Signal, Georgia department guard Brian Ulrich — who has since pleaded guilty to a seditious plot — said only Trump’s actions would prevent mass violence and death.

“Trump is acting now, maybe a few hundred extremists will die trying to burn cities down,” he wrote. “Trump is sitting on his hands, Biden is winning, millions are dying resisting the death of the First and Second Amendment.”

Rhodes and his advocates, Kenneth Harrelson, Kelly Meggs, Jessica Watkins, and Thomas Caldwell, asserted that their trip was primarily about providing security for dignitaries in Trump’s White House speech, and that their weapons cache was intended to support the group’s efforts. If violence breaks out in the streets with opposition demonstrators on January 6. They note that they never deployed these guns in Washington, which has strict gun laws, even after a pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol.

Cummings, a military veteran not charged with any crimes related to January 6, said he traveled to Washington with Harrelson and Jason Dolan, who pleaded guilty last year to his actions related to January 6, with the intent of supporting the group. Security details. He recalled meeting a dignitary who was tasked with protecting him but said he could not remember her name except that she sounded like a “Hispanic female”. She remained on the northwest side of the Capitol even as members of the department’s guards continued to march toward the Capitol.

Cummings said that at one point as the group was walking toward the Capitol, Meggs told him that the building had “been hacked.” Meggs remembered asking someone if the group should enter the Capitol.

Cummings left the group after using a potty outside the Capitol and only reconnected with them after they regrouped outside the Capitol. He noted that Rhodes ignored the police’s decision to start using tear gas against rioters.

“It sucked,” he remembers Rhodes saying. “It’s just CS gas.”
