Jennifer Coolidge and Naomi Watts on The Watcher and the problem of aging in Hollywood

Published

What would you do if you started receiving unknown and scary messages in your dream house?

“I don’t think I’m leaving all of a sudden,” Naomi Watts told ELLE.com, sympathizing with her character Nora Brannock at Netflix’s observer. In the thriller series, Nora and her family move to a stunning new home only to be sent threatening letters from a mysterious author who knows them by name and refers to the children as “Little Blood”.

However, Watts’ star Jennifer Coolidge would opt for a more defensive approach – one that includes “a group of Rottweilers, pit bulls and German Shepherds to cordon off the house.” It portrays Emmy Award winner Karen Calhoun, a realtor and old friend of Nora’s who seems to be keeping a secret. Although she was able to sell the Brannocks home on the show, in real life, Coolidge believes the family should have had some serious protection.

“I feel like that’s the thing that’s missing, it’s just some evil dog that can really save your life when someone is so horrible,” she says. “Then you think what a terrible thing you should do to a family, and you should have no mercy on a person like that.”

This twisted story is based on the haunting true experiences of the Broaddus family, who received similar messages from someone named The Watcher after they bought a house in Westfield, New Jersey, according to New York Magazine The story was published in 2018. While many neighbors were considered suspects, in the end, after years of police investigations, private investigations, Reddit theories, and neighborhood rumors, the real Watcher was never identified. The Broadus has found a new home.

“I think what makes this story so relatable is that you can imagine this family that dreamed of this place, and they had all kinds of plans in place, and even though there were risks, they did it anyway,” Watts says. “They finally got their dream. And to have these weird letters and then weird people swirling around in their dreams, they won’t give up easily. You can relate to that kind of story.”

Soon, Watts, who starred in the horror movie good night momAnd the Bip Bali will be filming in Runners: The Cabot Womenalso from observer Producer Rayan Murphy. And the Coolidge, who recently won an Emmy for her performance in white lotus He will return to the HBO cult series later this month. At 54 and 61 respectively, both Booked and Occupied stars (and countless others across the industry) debunked Sheikha comment heard WhatsApp Earlier in her career, it was over for women in Hollywood once they hit the age of 40. “I’ve been getting some great parts recently, and I’m not in my 30s anymore,” Coolidge says.

Here, co-stars talk about messing around on set observerEmmy’s Big Night for Coolidge, and Older Women’s Roles in Hollywood.

The observer The saga has a lot of twists and turns. What was your initial reaction to hearing that this was a true story? Did you hear about it before the project?

Naomi Watts: I didn’t, and I don’t know what was going on with me at the time, because I know most of the East Coast was following him with great honesty. But I didn’t know about it. But when I knew Ryan was going to call, I was told a little bit about the story and of course I went and read the article and immediately got sucked into it so hard, I devoured him. I felt super juicy and super curious. In this situation I imagined how difficult it would be. So it was a yes moment.

Jennifer Coolidge: I just remember knowing the story and I remember at the time it was the kind of one that you can’t really forget. It was annoying and it was very easy to imagine yourself in this situation. You grew up in suburbs outside of Boston and it’s the weirdest kind of story because you realize how vulnerable you are in an instant. All it takes is one scary person.

Have either of you tried to connect with the real people you portrayed? I know Jennifer, your Karen is more than fiction, but Naomi, have you tried connecting with Maria Broadus?

whats: No no. We stick to the text. Yes, it is based on a true story, but a creative license has been obtained. These people could be anyone, really. And I’ve certainly played true stories before and found myself wanting to have a conversation or form some kind of connection with this person. It can be incredibly useful, but it’s not always absolutely necessary. And especially when that person is unknown to the world, this is not entirely vital. In truth, we didn’t know how the story would end. We had some material, but we didn’t have all the scripts. So discovering it in real time actually turned out to be very useful with all the mystery surrounding it.

Both of your characters who start out as longtime friends are a new addition to the story. I guess you met before joining this project? What was your first day together, and what was it like building that relationship for the show?

whats: We didn’t know each other.

College: No, but I’ve been a big fan of Naomi for a very long time. She’s kind of like an icon in our field and she’s done such a great job and everything is so different. And I never forget anything you were going to do, Naomi. Like, you’re etched into my mind and it’s amazing that you’re such a very humble person. What a great combination to be at the top of your game and kind of unaware of all the liking in some way. Or maybe you know and you’re just pretending you don’t. I don’t know.

whats: I was thrilled to learn that Jane was joining the cast. I had literally just finished watching W . was foundHight Lotus. I mean, I’ve known her work from previous pieces, but this was a moment to really watch her shine. She was just impressed with her performance at it, as was the rest of the world. And so it was great to be with her. And yes, we had this friendship that was on the page and it was important to me that we were comfortable with each other and everything and got to know each other on and off the set. [We] Take some time to hang out a bit. It is pure gold. You have brought a lot.

College: And we did messing around, too. We had a few days where we were really kidding.

whats: yes. We’ve definitely gone off the page and done a few things of our own. Trying to keep up with Jen and then keep a straight face isn’t easy, but it was fun [laughs]. It makes you raise your game.

By the way, speaking of Jennifer, congratulations on Emmy. How did you celebrate?

College: Well, I still haven’t celebrated yet. I had a bunch of things going on at the time and hadn’t locked the doors yet. I can not wait. I mean, maybe I’ll do it on Halloween night or something. There were some after parties after the Emmys, but I couldn’t go to them because I had this heavy beaded dress and it kind of sucked the life out of me. I couldn’t go out and celebrate after that. So, you know, I might have to travel somewhere.

Do you think Karen can sell Tanya McQuoid, your character white lotusAnd the a house?

College: Oh, that’s a good question. I think Tanya can be very disappointing and make you think that she is going to buy a house from you, but I feel like Tanya at the last minute might let you down. This would make Karen go crazy.

whats: I feel like I would buy anything from Karen.

College: really? Nora is smarter than that.

whats: Naomi though.

College: oh, Naomi! Well I see that. you are right.

You two are thriving in your career now, and have a huge resume behind you. Naomi, you I talked about it recently How did someone tell you earlier in your career that a woman won’t be able to act after turning 40 because she has become “incapable”. I can’t believe anyone told you that. But years later, how do you feel looking at that? Do you think Hollywood’s view of older women has changed?

whats: I think it has definitely changed. Incidentally, it was commented like, “That’s silly, but that’s the theory,” and I was told because I came in too late. Not to say I didn’t try; I’ve been trying to hack for over a decade, but it wasn’t until I was in my early thirties that I actually managed to get a job where people were actually going to see this movie, and that was Mulholland Road. And so, the theory was that you have to go off, pedal to the metal, and work like crazy, because it’s probably going to end up all over the place. And yes, that horrifying term was used and I was like, “Wait, what? What exactly does that mean? I see other, much older women on screen.”

Then I thought, Oh, well, you mean you don’t like playing the lead lady, or what, the genitals just don’t work anymore, so now we have to play the crazy ladies? Like, that’s some bullshit. But by the way, we’re actors, and we don’t mind playing crazy ladies. I’m good with that; These parts are actually getting really interesting [laughs]. I have always preferred the more exclusive type of work. And I don’t like being trapped. I don’t like being told “these are the rules” very often.

Hollywood has definitely changed. I mean, look, there are a lot of amazing actresses who are in their fifties, making huge strides in their careers, and they’re not going anywhere anytime soon.

Jennifer, is that something you’ve also tried? Have you noticed a change as well?

College: I guess you should just not listen to him [the criticism] and go ahead. I’ve been to dinner parties where the whole night goes on, you know, “there are no women’s parts anymore,” and I feel like if you really sit down and make that subconscious a reality, somehow your brain hears that and you can get depressed. But, I don’t know, I’ve been getting some great parts lately, and I’m no longer in my 30s. And as I say, some of the greatest roles I’ve ever played, I’ve had in the past two years.

whats: He has changed. It has definitely changed.

College: It has definitely changed and some very exciting things are happening, I think. Naomi and I had a great manager observer.

I’ve also noticed that most of the women are over 50 in the cast [including Mia Farrow, Margo Martindale, and Noma Dumezweni]which is really cool.

whats: All of them!

College: yes. And Jane Lynch, what a brilliant director [of The Watcher]. I think it’s just up to us to make sure that if these parts aren’t given to us, we make them happen.
