Is the Rolex Zenith Daytona the Next Holy Grail Watch?

the cup hours They are a bit like presidents: oftentimes it is the oldest, the grayest, the most dated that triumphs. Which is what makes the new, 34-year-old Zenith-caliber Rolex Daytona a hands-on star. But this particular model, born in 1988 in Geneva to passionate parents (Rolex Daytona movement and Zenith El Primero), despite its age, is on the fast track to stardom.

The Zenith Daytona (let’s call it the ZD) is representative of the so-called new luxury movement, which refers to pieces made in the ’80s and ’90s that aren’t exactly retro, but not quite modern either. For a generation of fans who grew up in the ’90s and now own themselves as collectors, neoclassical watches just happen to be the ones they grew up with. “Tomorrow’s consumer will not be as appreciated as the older collectors were [watches made before the late ‘80s],” says Tim Bender, one of ZD’s biggest fans, a dude who knows stuff, and owner of Fog City Vintage.

Bender refers to what John Mayer said hodinky Once, about how to direct our idea of what it means to make it guide what we buy. The icons that represent making this happen are calcified at a young age, and we spend the rest of our lives chasing those badges of success. This is why Jacek Kozubek, one of ZD’s biggest fans, prof Dude who knows his stuffand owner of the Tropical Watch Company, says he now sells more new vintage watches than anything else.

A lot of people are dabbling in antique collecting, Kuzubic says, and a lot of them started with neoclassical pieces. “It’s much easier to wrap your head around a $7,000 ’90s thing than it is to buy a $30,000 ’70s thing,” Kozubic says. “It’s easier: easier to buy, easier to service, less money to spend, just plain cool.” Kozubek continues to call ZD the Goldilocks of watches: they have the rugged good looks and signs of old folks’ love with the durability and easy-to-wear that come with modern pieces. Of course, the way the watch market works, getting a ZD isn’t that easy anymore: Bender and Kozubek each say they sell about four to five a month for upwards of $40,000 (as long as it has cases and papers).

For the birth of the ZD, Rolex brought in (and heavily modified) Zenith’s El Primero caliber, which powered the world’s first automatic chronograph movement. This modified movement was put into the very first Rolex Daytona automatic watch. What that means in layman’s terms is that Daytona no longer needs to be wound up every day. “It becomes a usable watch,” Kozubic says.

However, ZD is a far cry from Nebo’s baby. She has her good masculine looks. One of its distinguishing features is a curious detail: the “inverted 6,” an inverted 6 in the sub-dial at the bottom of the ZD’s face. (This detail only appears on versions made from the ’88 through the early ’90s.) Both Bender and Kozubek point to the ZD’s brushed case and lugs, compared to the brushed versions of modern Daytonas. Kuzubic argues that it makes “a very, very, very big difference in the feel of the watch”. New polished watches look elegant and luxurious, but the ZD’s polished look is sporty—exactly how an old Rolex is supposed to feel.

But the ZD’s true appeal may come down to the inexplicable way it makes collectors feel. Back in the 90s, there was no Google, no Twitter, no Instagram you could worry about without having your iPhone and looking at a screen. “People will actually talk to each other,” Kuzubic says. “You’re wearing the watch, and it makes you feel like you’re in the ’90s.” For many ZD fans, like Kozubek, that alone is worth the price of admission.
