UK workers are given the right to work flexibly from day one

Published

“If you want to ask for flexible work from day one in a role, always drive with what’s in it for the employer,” she says. “Give them no reason to say no to your request! They will benefit from increased productivity and work output… a calmer, more focused environment for making sales or business calls and so much more – showcasing the positives and perks to make flexible working seem like a no-brainer.”

Rather than popping the application to a new employer “out of nowhere,” she advises letting them know your preferences as early in the process as appropriate. If you’re a new starter, that might mean having these discussions when negotiating your salary or when you’re talking about how your first day turned out; Otherwise, it might mean scheduling a catch-up with your line manager.

Getting up on a busy Monday morning and asking your colleagues about Flexible Fridays isn’t likely to do you any good. “When it comes to most things in life, timing is everything,” notes psychotherapist turned executive coach Desiree Silverstone. “If you want someone to listen to what you have to say, it helps to approach them at a time when they are most open to hearing what you have to say. Consider setting up a date when the focus is on you.”

“Preparation is a very useful way to prepare someone,” she adds. “Explain that you are aware that you are just starting your business, but would appreciate their consideration of your application.”

Kate Middleton, Princess of WalesShe might as well be the Princess of Barrel Curls, because the 40-year-old has been sporting her signature style for over a decade. And for good reason, her glossy curls are weatherproof and always ready for a photoshoot. Had it not been against the royal rules, there is no doubt that she would have been sponsored by Pantene the second time she entered the public eye. The Dyson Air Wrap never can.

All of which is to say that when Kate arrived at the diplomatic reception at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, December 6, her harmless outburst was legitimately surprising. Long and distinctive curls. Hello, straight hair era.

The diplomatic reception, held annually by the royal family to honor members of the diplomatic corps in the state rooms of the palace, was a white-tie affair—which meant that crowns were very much expected. For the occasion, Princess chose the Lotus Flower Tiara, the first time she’s worn the piece since 2015; She wore it for the first time in 2013. It should be noted that this is the first time that Kate has designed a crown with her hair down. She usually puts tiaras on romantic updos.
