‘Marilyn Monroe by Eve Arnold’ (out Sep. 30) collects the photographer’s intimate and candid images of the Hollywood icon

Photojournalist Eve Arnold’s pictures of Marilyn Monroe are some of the most intimate and candid ever taken of the Hollywood legend, springing not just from the pair’s long collaboration, but from a friendship that began in the early 1950s.
During her lifetime, Arnold, who died in 2012 at the age of 99, published two books collecting her images of Monroe. Now, Marilyn Monroe by Eve Arnold, a newly revised and redesigned edition of the photographer’s 1987 book Marilyn Monroe: An Appreciation, spotlights more than 100 of her pictures of the actress.
Along with a forward by Anjelica Huston, a new introduction by Arnold’s grandson Michael Arnold and the photographer’s own biography of Monroe, the book, out Sep. 30 from ACC Art Books, features many never-before seen photos from Arnold’s archive. See a few of the highlights here.

Arnold’s photos of Monroe on the set of 1961’s The Misfits are some of her most famous images of the actress. This never-before-seen photo shows Marilyn between takes on the film’s Nevada set in 1960.
Ray of Sunshine

Another never-before-seen 1960 photo from The Misfits captures the luminous quality that made Monroe a star.
Beauty and the Boa

A studio photo session, Arnold writes in the book, “provides the greatest chance for control. One can plan one’s own lighting, work to one’s own time clock, shoot and reshoot, change the subject’s hair style, change or add or subtract clothing.” Here, Monroe poses with a feather boa in a never-before-seen outtake from a 1960 shoot to promote The Misfits.
Peekaboo

Yet another never-before-seen pic shows Arnold herself with a playful Monroe on the set of a 1960 photo shoot in Los Angeles.
Book Worm

Eight years earlier, in 1952, Arnold caught a candid snap of Monroe reading James Joyce’s Ulysses in Mr. Sinai, New York.
Woman’s Best Friend

Another 1952 photo shows Monroe cuddling up to a furry friend in Long Island, New York.
Screen Legends

Prior to filming their 1957 picture The Prince and the Showgirl, Laurence Olivier and Monroe held court during a 1956 press conference at New York City’s Waldorf Astoria hotel.
Set Visit

Monroe’s third husband, playwright Arthur Miller, visited her on the set of The Misfits in 1960. The couple would end their five-year marriage the following year.
Group Photo

Arnold photographed Monroe along with The Misfits co-stars Eli Wallach, Clark Gable and Montgomery Clift on the film’s Nevada set in 1960.
Sleeping Beauty

Monroe, who famously claimed that she wore nothing but Chanel No. 5 to bed, posed in possibly that very ensemble for Arnold during a 1960 photo shoot.
